Consul General Participates at the First ASEAN Dialogues

18 December 2017 VANCOUVER —Consul General Neil Ferrer participated as a resource speaker and panelist at the ASEAN Dialogues on November 09. The event, which was organized by the Asia Pacific Youth Council (APYC), an initiative of the Asia Pacific Foundation (APF) of Canada, is the first of a three-part event series on the ASEAN.
Consul General Ferrer was joined by Mr. Gordon Longmuir, former Ambassador of Canada to Cambodia, and Dr. Paul Evans, interim Executive Director of the Institute of Asian Research at the University of British Columbia as discussants to provide background and context to frame the discussion on the internal and external challenges that the ASEAN is facing; strengths and shortcomings of the ASEAN in dealing with these challenges; and Canada’s contribution, particularly the Canadian youth, in making them better informed and relevant to ASEAN’s next phase.
Consul General Ferrer presented the ASEAN to the attendees as a regional force to be reckoned with in the Asia-Pacific geopolitical milieu, an economic powerhouse ranked 7th largest in the world, and 3rd largest in Asia. He also presented the vision of ASEAN 2025 as well as the thematic priorities of the current PH Chairmanship as the association celebrates its 50th anniversary.
On a related note, the Consulate General has opened its ongoing “ASEAN Corner” information exhibit at the public reception area of Vancouver PCG. The exhibit, aimed at raising awareness on the ASEAN and the Philippines’ Chairmanship in 2017, will run from November 3 to December 22. END
