19 January 2016 —The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver invites qualified members of the Filipino-Canadian communities in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon and Northwest Territories to submit nominations to the 2016 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas.
Initially conferred in 1991 by the late President Corazon C. Aquino through the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), the Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas is a biennial awards system that gives recognition to Filipinos and other individuals or organizations which contribute to Philippine development initiatives, or promote the interests of overseas Filipino communities. The awards are also given to overseas Filipinos who have exceptionally distinguished themselves in their work or profession and have brought honor to the Filipino nation. A distinct category is also reserved for foreign individuals or organizations for their exceptional contribution to the Philippines and for advancing the cause of overseas Filipino communities.
There are four categories of awards to be conferred, namely:
- Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino (LINKAPIL) Award, which recognizes Filipino individuals or organizations for their exceptional or significant contribution to reconstruction, progress and development in the Philippines;
- Banaag Award, which recognizes Filipino individuals or organizations for their significant contribution to advance the cause or promote the interests of overseas Filipino communities;
- Kaanib ng Bayan Award, which recognizes foreign individuals or organizations for their exceptional or significant contribution to Philippine reconstruction, progress and development, or to advance the cause or promote the interests of overseas Filipino communities; and
- Pamana ng Pilipino Award, which recognizes Filipinos overseas who exemplifies the talent and industry of the Filipino, have brought the country honor and recognition through excellence and distinction in the pursuit of their work or profession.
Nominees should have accomplished at least five years work or contribution in the field to which they are nominated. Nominations may be submitted through the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, addressed to the attention of the Awards Committee.
